How to Write a Thesis Abstract

I was requested by some of my colleagues and Master students to help with abstract writing. Here are some stock expressions in the filed of Education to help with Thai to English abstract translation:
1. State research objectives

• The purpose(s) of this study was(were) to examine/investigate/analyze/compare/determine...
• The objective(s) of this study was(were) to examine/investigate/analyze/compare/determine...
• This study examined/investigated (+noun phrase)
• This research aimed to (+ verb phrase)

EX: The purpose of this study was to determine if differences exist between the reading scores of students learning by using SQ3Rs and students learning by traditional methods.

2. State population/sample
Population

• The population of this study were...........students from...........
  

• Sample of ........... were selected from .......by using ......method
• .....(number) ...students were selected (from.....) using....method

EX: 375 students were selected through cluster and simple random sampling methods.
Samples were selected by using a two-stage cluster random sampling technique.

3. State methods/Instruments/Statistics

• A 50-item questionnaire with Likert scale on ...(topic) ...was developed (if you are the one created it) ....and administered to the sample.
• The instrument(s) used in this study was(were) .........,

Please make sure that your abstract cover all these important parts required by the Office of Graduate Studies. There are a lot of stock expressions used in writing this kind of traditional abstracts, however, I hope this can help you to get started. Q/A is welcomed.

คุณครูหลายท่านอาจเคยอยากสร้างบทเรียน หรือข้อสอบ listening ภาษาอังกฤษแต่มีปัญหาว่าเขียนบทเสร็จแล้วหาเจ้าของภาษาอ่านให้ไม่ได้ โรงเรียนก็ห่างไกลเสียเหลือเกิน แต่ถ้าเราสามารถเข้าถึง internet ได้เรื่องนี้ก็ไม่ไเป็นปัญหาอีกต่อไปแล้วค่ะ ขอเพียงคุณครูเตรียมบทให้พร้อม บน internet จะมี web ที่ให้บริการโดยใช้ Text to speech (TTS) technology มีหลายตัวที่คุณภาพใช้ได้ และฟรี มาเริ่มกันที่ ispeech ก่อนดีกว่านะคะ ตัวนี้ให้สร้าง account ฟรี สามารถเก็บตัวที่เราแปลงแล้วไว้ในบัญชีเหมือน email และ download เป็น MP3 ได้ด้วย ที่ฟรี จะเป็นตัว basic ซึ่งแปลงได้ความยาวไม่เกินข้อความละ 1 นาทีต่อครั้ง แล้วเราต่อยเอามาตัดต่อเพิ่มเอาทีหลังได้ค่ะ

การใช้ web ispeech เข้าใช้งานที่ http://www.ispeech.org/loginin หน้าตา web เหมือนด้านซ้ายมือนี้ค่ะ สมาชิกใหม่ให้ Click ที่ No account? Sign Up→ จากนั้นก็จะมีให้สมัครฟรี โดยใช้ email account ของเรา ทาง support ของ ispeech จะส่ง password ให้ทาง email เพื่อเข้าลงทะเบียนครั้งต่อไป ก็มองหา support - Welcome to Ispeech ใน inbox นะคะ ครั้งต่อไปก็ใช้ email และ password ที่ได้มา sign in ก็เรียบร้อย

เมื่อเข้าไปเล้วให้เลือก basic โดย click ที่ Continue free ตัวอื่นเสียตังค์ค่ะ พอคลิ๊กแล้วหน้าตา web จะเป็นเหมือนข้างล่าง ให้เลือเอาว่าจะพิมพ์ข้อความ (ENTER TEXT) หรือ UPLOAD FILE ชึ่งจะสามารถ upload ได้หลายชนิดมาก ในที่นี้ลอง พิมพ์ข้อความดู
Click ที่ ENTER TEXT จะมีช่องให้พิมพ์ข้อความ ด้านบนจะมี option ให้เลือกคือเสียงพูด มีผู้ชายผู้หญิงสำเนียงต่างๆ ให้เลือก ในที่นี้จะเลือก English Female (United States) เราสามารถทดลองดูได้ว่าเสียงไหนที่เราชอบและเป็นธรรมชาติที่สุด สำหรับประโยคที่เราเลือก โดยปกติถ้าประโยคไม่ยาวมาก และไม่มีชื่อภาษาอื่นๆ มักไม่มีปัญหาอะไร เราสามารถ copy ข้อความมา paste ใส่ได้ด้วยนะคะ มีข้อแม้คือ เครื่องหมายวรรคตอน พวก full stop (period) หรือ comma question marks ฯลฯ ต้องถูก เพราะมีผลต่อการออกเสียง เห็นความสำคัญของ punctuationในการพูดแล้วใช่ไหมคะ ช่องเล็กด้านบนขวามือ จะเป็นความเร็ว ความเร็วปกติคือ 0 ซึ่งอาจเร็วไปสำหรับเด็ก เราก็ปรับความเร็งให้ช้าลง ในที่นี้ใช้ -20 เพราะช้ากว่านี้ก็ช้าเกินไปแล้ว แต่ลองฟังดูหลายแบบก็ได้ค่ะ จากนั้นก็ Click ที่ Listen แล้วรอ ก็จะเห็นหน้า web เหมือนด้านซ้ายมือนี้ คุณครูจะ download เลย ก็ได้ แต่แนะนำให้ไปดูที่จัดเก็บไว้ในบัญชีก่อน โดน Click ที่ library มุมซ้ายบนค่ะ หน้าตา library จะเป็นอย่างนี้ จะมีรายการที่เราแปลงเป็นเสียง MP3 อยู่ด้านล่าง เราก็เลือกได้ว่าจะฟังดูก่อน จะ download หรือจะลบทิ้ง ดูตามสัญลักษณ์เอานะคะ Download แล้ว File จะมีชื่อว่า audio มักเก็บไว้ใน My Document >> Download อบ่าลืมเปลี่ยนชื่อ file เพื่อสะดวกต่อการใช้งานนะคะ ไฟล์เสียงที่ได้สามารถใช้ได้เลยหรือนำไปตัดต่อก่อนก็ได้ค่ะ โปรแกรมตัดต่อก็มีหลายคัว แต่ถ้าข้อสอบเราเป็นข้อๆ อยู่แล้ว เล่นไปทีละข้อก็ง่ายดีค่ะ ได้ความว่ายังไงเล่าให้ฟังบ้งนะคะ
